序文(一部)
人はそれぞれの希望や夢を抱いていますが、まず一ついえることは、それは達成できるということです。私には様々な弊害が道を塞いでいましたが、それを乗り越えるという強い気持ちを持つことで実を結ぶことができました。結果、農学博士を取得したのです。
私が4歳の頃私の父はエンジニアという職業が災いし、ほかの知識層の人々と共にクメールルージュ(共産主義)によって虐殺されました。母は5人の幼い子供たちと残され、後に末っ子の妹は病気と飢餓で亡くなったのです。教師をしていた母は月約30ドルの収入で食料と住まい、そして私たちに限られた教育を与えていかなければならなくなりました。私に残されている20年以上前の記憶は非常に僅かなものです。家族が生き延びるために釣りをしたこと、薪を集めたこと・・。父親の記憶はほぼなく、写真すら燃やされてしまい、残っていません。

初めて真新しい手作りのズボンを履いたのは、12歳の中学生の頃、数学で最優秀賞を受けたときのことです。その頃私は自分の才能を確信し、勉学をあきらめないようになっていました。その後も様々な賞をうけましたが、全ては努力なしでは叶わなかったことです。
本 書は私自身がキリングフィールドから逃れるまでの苦労、それを乗り越えて大学教授(准教授)になるまでの経験を書きました。わたしの個人的な達成までの道 のりに関心を持つ人、また大学教授になる目標を持っている人などには大学教授になるまでのプロセス、個人的な経験やアドバイスを参考にしつつ、読んでいた だけると幸いです。
